Navigating the Evolving Landscape of Modular and Prefabricated Construction
To be honest, things are moving fast these days. Everyone's talking about prefabrication, modular construction… It’s all the rage, isn’t it? Used to be, you’d spend weeks on site, dust flying everywhere, coordinating all the different trades. Now, they want it built in a factory, shipped out, and bolted down. Sounds good on paper, but...I've been seeing a lot of designs that look beautiful in CAD but fall apart as soon as you try to actually build them. Have you noticed? Like, ridiculously over-engineered connections, or specifying materials that are just impossible to source consistently. It's frustrating. Engineers sometimes forget we're dealing with real-world tolerances, not perfect simulations. We use a lot of galvanized steel, of course. That cold, oily smell is… comforting, in a weird way. Been working with it for years. You can tell a good batch just by the weight. And lately, there's been this push for composite materials – fiberglass reinforced polymers. Lightweight, strong... but they feel so… plasticky. Doesn't inspire confidence, you know? We're also back to using more timber, sustainably sourced stuff. Feels good, smells good, but needs proper treatment to avoid rot. It’s always a balance.
